This comes down to what, where and why you intend to go hunting.
In short:
For most people getting into hunting you’l want the flexibility to hunt game and feral animals on both public and private land. For this you'll need the Restricted License (we hold courses online and in-person as needed).
If you only want to hunt the following species on private land, with the land owners permissions, you do not require a hunting license: rabbits, foxes, pigs, goats, deer, hares, feral cats, wild dogs (excluding dingos).
Note that while it's not legally required when hunting those species, holding a General or Restricted license is still recommended as it comes with $25m public liability insurance. If however you also intend to hunt game birds, you will likely require a hunting license.
There are numerous other hunting licenses available, but these tend to be for professionals or those only wanting to hunt private land:
Restricted - Best for public & private land when you're a recreational hunter.
General - If you only intend to hunt on private land.
Restricted Guide - If you intend to be paid to guide other hunters on public and private land.
General Guide - If you intend be paid to guide other hunters on public land only.
Commercial - If you intend to sell the animals you harvest for human or animal consumption.
Restricted Visitor - Overseas hunters wanting to hunt on public or private land
General Visitor - Overseas hunters wanting to hunt on private land only.
